Lenten Penitential

"Were you there when they crowned Him with the thorns?"

Yes. yes, this I do admit, albeit ashamedly.
For as 'time-out-of-mind' prayer is swept up in mystery,
And moments then-and-now can be touched by Eternity;
I was there, so there, and must confess, only truthfully,
It was not "they" who wrought this iniquity; it was me,
It was me.

This crown of thorns, I plated to be,
A work of pride, all that was in me.
Placed and pressed hard into His head,
Pierced and hurting at once He bled.
Then.

As the blood trickled down, into His eyes,
Somehow my sin, He could not recognize,
And glanced through me with no despise,
But with only the love that in Him lies,
For.

This love-true love found home again,
Touched my soul as my heart did rend,
Awakened the memory of an Eternal friend,
And.

"Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble."
