Saint Vincent's Day

There I was,
the holy ghost
tugging sharply on my ear
demanding information.

Was I the culprit
who took the money
from the poorbox?

How could I protest
my innocence?
for though
my guilt did not lie
in taking poorbox coin,
it lay deeper

It lay
in never having
tossed coin
into the poorbox
in the first place.

I stood condemned,
but my feet were hurting,
so I sat down.
This seemed to relieve
most of the felt condemnation.
